Meeting Damylin
When Kalila became Damylin’s nurse, he was just two years old—and not yet walking. At that time, his future mobility was uncertain. Damylin has DiGeorge syndrome, also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, a genetic condition often associated with developmental delays, low muscle tone and coordination challenges. Like many children with this diagnosis, Damylin showed little interest in crawling or moving independently, raising difficult questions about if and when he would walk.
The milestone that changed everything
Those early years required patience, faith and consistency. Kalila worked closely with Damylin’s family and therapy team, focusing on structured routines, encouragement and intentional therapeutic interventions. Six months into his care, something remarkable happened: Damylin took his first steps.
His parents, overwhelmed with joy, shared a video of this special milestone with family and friends, grateful to witness a moment they once feared might never come.
“I wasn’t there the exact moment it happened, as I was on vacation, but it marked the beginning of a whole new chapter for him,” says Kalila.
Still growing strong
Today, at six years old, Damylin’s growth continues to amaze those around him. He walks confidently up and down stairs, recognizes colors and communicates using both hand gestures and his tablet. Each achievement reflects not only his determination but also the impact of a stable, supportive care environment.
Kalila provides care for Damylin five days a week, Monday through Friday, and approaches each day with purpose. She introduces new life skills and developmental activities regularly, allowing Damylin the time he needs to master them.
“He is a strong visual learner and exceptionally intelligent, which makes the process both rewarding and inspiring,” says Kalila.
Damylin currently participates in homebound schooling while continuing his therapies. Outside of care and school, he enjoys the simple joys of childhood—using his iPad to learn and explore, watching Disney movies and spending time with his siblings, especially playing with his sister after school.
Why consistency matters in complex care
Before walking, Damylin relied entirely on his parents, his nurse and therapy providers for mobility. He needed to be carried and showed little interest in independent movement. That reality made his first steps especially meaningful. Doctors and caregivers had expressed real concerns about his limited engagement with mobility, making his progress all the more profound.
A nurse’s pride
“Watching his progression has been an absolute honor,” says Kalila. “His journey is a beautiful reminder that development is not a race; it’s a unique and personal path. With the right support, patience and love, extraordinary progress is always possible. I am beyond proud of how far he has come and grateful to be a part of his story.”
Life beyond the milestones
Beyond mobility, Damylin’s overall health has also stabilized. Early on, he experienced frequent hospitalizations due to being immunocompromised, and his parents struggled to keep him out of the hospital. Since Kalila became his consistent nurse, that pattern has shifted. Continuity of care has played a critical role, and over several years he has required hospitalization only two to three times.
The future: hope, health and independence
Looking ahead, Damylin’s care team and family share goals centered on his respiratory health and long‑term independence. He has successfully completed a tracheostomy cap‑off trial, with a sleep study planned to further assess his airway during rest. Depending on the results, corrective jaw surgery may be considered, with the long‑term hope of eventually removing his tracheostomy.
A reminder of what’s possible
For Kalila, being part of Damylin’s story is deeply meaningful. His progress reflects what is possible when consistent, compassionate care meets resilience and family love.
