Every September, Healthy Aging® Month encourages people to approach aging with intention, embracing the habits that contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life. Founded in 1992, the annual observance promotes personal responsibility for health across physical, social and mental aspects. The 2026 theme, “Curiosity Has No Age Limit,” highlights the powerful role curiosity can play in helping people stay engaged, connected and thriving as they age.
While aging brings inevitable changes, research continues to show that many factors influencing healthy aging are within our control. According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), healthy habits such as regular physical activity, nutritious eating, adequate rest, preventive healthcare and attention to mental health can help individuals maintain independence and quality of life as they grow older. The NIA also stresses that it’s never too late to adopt habits that support healthy aging. This blog will discuss healthy aging tips for men as well as habits they can adopt to live healthier and fuller lives.
Why curiosity matters
This year’s theme highlights the healthy benefits of curiosity in older people. Whether it’s learning a new hobby, exploring unfamiliar places, asking questions or gaining new perspectives, curiosity keeps people engaged with the world around them.
Research suggests that curiosity may have benefits that extend far beyond enjoyment. According to ScienceDirect, growing evidence indicates that curiosity may play an important role in supporting cognitive function, overall well-being and physical health in older adults.
Additional research cited by the National Library of Medicine found that older adults who demonstrated higher levels of curiosity had greater survival rates over a five-year period compared to those who were less curious. Researchers suggested that curiosity may be an important predictor of successful aging.
Curiosity may also support memory and mental wellness. Studies have shown that greater interest in learning new information is associated with improved recall in both younger and older adults. Researchers have also linked curiosity to higher well-being in later life, while declining curiosity may be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease. Continued engagement in cognitively stimulating activities may help protect against cognitive decline and contribute to longevity.
Healthy aging tips for older men
Men face unique challenges when it comes to healthy aging. HealthInAging.org notes that men are often less likely than women to seek medical care when they don’t feel well. Survey findings cited by the organization show that 40 percent of men would wait several days before seeking treatment when sick, and 17 percent would delay care for at least a week.
Because preventive care can play a critical role in long-term health, many organizations recommend that older men make regular healthcare visits a priority. HealthInAging.org encourages men to stay current on vaccinations, screenings and checkups, even when they feel healthy. The organization also recommends taking medications and supplements only as directed to reduce the risk of dangerous interactions, using sunscreen to protect against sun damage and taking steps to prevent falls and fractures, which include taking calcium and vitamin D supplements and weight training. Always consult with your doctor before making any of these changes!
Physical activity remains another cornerstone of healthy aging. The NIA emphasizes the importance of staying active, eating nutritious foods, getting adequate sleep and proactively managing mental, cognitive and physical health. Even small improvements in these areas can have meaningful long-term benefits.
The importance of sleep and healthy habits
Healthy aging isn’t only about exercise and routine medical care. Sleep also plays a vital role in overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults generally benefit from seven to nine hours of sleep each night, allowing the body time to repair and support heart and blood vessel health. The Mayo Clinic also emphasizes maintaining a healthy weight to lower the risk of heart disease and other health complications.
Lifestyle choices matter as well. HealthInAging.org recommends avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise.
Staying connected as we age
Social connection plays a significant role in emotional and cognitive well-being in older adults. The NIA notes that social engagement can support brain function, improve mental health and reduce feelings of loneliness.
According to the NIA, as people age, they may experience life changes that increase the risk of isolation, including health challenges, caregiving responsibilities or the loss of loved ones. The NIA distinguishes loneliness from social isolation, explaining that loneliness is the feeling of being alone, while social isolation refers to having limited social contacts. Both conditions have been associated with increased risks of depression, heart disease and cognitive decline.
Spending time with family, friends and community groups can help combat loneliness while providing opportunities for meaningful interaction and continued engagement. HealthInAging.org also recommends activities that stimulate the mind, including reading, puzzles and games.
