A fighter from the very beginning

Born prematurely, Joshua, affectionately known as JJ, spent the first eight months of his life in the hospital. During that time, he was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and narrowing of the larynx. Just weeks after his birth, doctors performed a tracheostomy to help him breathe.

For his family, those early months were filled with uncertainty.

“We would go to visit him, and we never knew what the news of the day was going to be,” his grandmother Marsha recalls. “One day the news would be good, and the next day not so good.”

Despite the constant ups and downs, JJ showed incredible resilience. Even after coming home, his journey was far from over. He remained on a ventilator for nearly two years, yet through every obstacle he faced, he prevailed.

“With everything JJ has been through, he never gave up,” Marsha says.

Learning to navigate school life

As JJ began school, he faced a new set of challenges. Limited speech sometimes made communication difficult, and attending public school with a tracheostomy required careful planning and constant attention.

Fortunately, JJ had a strong support system. Jeff, who has cared for JJ since pre-kindergarten, played an essential role in helping him navigate the classroom, build confidence and thrive among his peers. Each day began with making sure JJ’s Go-Bag—filled with emergency medical supplies—was packed and ready, an important safeguard that accompanied JJ wherever he went.

“Jeff has been so good to JJ and has helped him so much through the years to become the person he is today,” Marsha shares.

With Jeff’s support and encouragement, JJ formed meaningful friendships and embraced many of the same experiences as his classmates. The trust they built together laid the foundation for his success both in and beyond the classroom.

“JJ was an eager student,” Jeff says. “He wanted to go to school and be part of his community. Once we established a way to communicate, we built trust. That trust gave him the confidence to engage and participate.”

An active school life

JJ enjoyed a full schedule in high school and stayed engaged throughout the school day.

“The bus arrived at 7:15 a.m. to take us to school and we didn’t return home until 5 p.m.,” Jeff says.

At his high school, JJ and other students with disabilities were supported through a specialized classroom program that fostered learning, growth and inclusion among 14 students divided into two groups.

“Lunch was our favorite class,” Jeff jokes. “JJ was a big fan of the extra-curricular classes like gym and music. He was also an active member of the student body.”

Teaching others through understanding

Every school year introduced JJ to new classmates who were naturally curious about his tracheostomy.

Rather than shy away from questions, JJ embraced those interactions as opportunities to educate others.

“JJ never minded showing his trach to his classmates and helping them understand why he had it and what it did,” Jeff says.

These conversations often led to greater understanding and acceptance.

“Once they understood its purpose, they understood why he was quiet and became more accepting,” he says.

Memories that will last a lifetime

Reflecting on the years they have spent together, Jeff says some of his favorite memories with JJ were attending the Special Olympics and sharing experiences on school field trips.

“JJ attended and participated in the Special Olympics every year,” says Jeff. “Most of the meets were at neighboring schools. During his first-year competing, he won gold in both of his events, the 50-meter walk and the softball throw.”

In addition to the Special Olympics, JJ has enjoyed many memorable school experiences over the years with Jeff by his side.

“The field trip I will remember most was a visit to the local theater to see The Jungle Book Live,” Jeff says. “JJ fell in love with the music at this event and has loved music ever since.”

Overcoming challenges together

“Over the years, JJ has undergone medical procedures that have made walking difficult,” Jeff says. “Seeing him become about 90% ambulatory has been a huge accomplishment. Maintaining a balanced diet was another challenge that took a lot of effort and persistence. Communication remains his biggest challenge, but he continues to work at it every day.”

Despite facing obstacles, JJ’s enthusiasm for school never faded, making graduation an especially meaningful achievement this year.

The meaning of graduation

For JJ, graduating high school means much more than just receiving a diploma. It represents years of perseverance, determination and growth.

For Jeff, walking alongside JJ at graduation carries special significance.

“Having been by his side every step of the way and watching him build lasting friendships with his classmates, it has been an amazing journey for both of us,” he says.

The moment celebrates not only JJ’s accomplishment but also the support, dedication and friendship that helped him reach this milestone.

“We don’t know what tomorrow brings,” Marsha says, “But we are going to let JJ try and have the best life possible and approach each day with a positive attitude.”
