Maxim Healthcare Services is proud to announce William (Bill) Shields, LPN, as the National Homecare Caregiver of the Year. This honor recognizes nurses and caregivers who exemplify Maxim’s core values and deliver quality care.
Bill’s unwavering dedication and compassion have been consistently recognized throughout his tenure at Maxim. A former Caregiver of the Month at the Baltimore office, Bill was nominated as their 2024 Caregiver of the Year and then won at the Area level, before being selected as the North Region Caregiver of the Year. His wholehearted commitment to his patients and profession, coupled with his heart for servant leadership stands out to all who meet him. Bill truly exemplifies Maxim’s mission and values as a human being and as a nurse.
For 29 years, Bill has devoted his life to nursing, with 24 of those spent at Maxim. For the past 16 years, he has cared for the same patient who lives with ALS. Having served in the Army and Army National Guard, Bill brings a deep understanding of how ALS disproportionately impacts veterans, allowing him to provide compassionate and empathetic care. He has accompanied his patient to doctor’s appointments and hospitalizations and traveled with him despite complex medical needs — all while maintaining nearly perfect attendance.
Known for his professionalism, reliability and strong communication, Bill has also trained other nurses, collaborated closely with supervisors and navigated emergency situations with grace. His patient describes him as their “arms, legs and voice,” acknowledging Bill’s role in enabling a quality of life that would’ve been otherwise impossible.
“Bill has been a dedicated nurse in assisting me with my care since I was first diagnosed back in 2008, says Bill’s patient. “It is extremely rare for nurses to remain on a case as long as Bill has been working with me. That speaks to his selfless dedication to his craft and to me as his patient.”
Bill’s compassion, servant leadership and quality care continue to inspire both colleagues and the Maxim community, showcasing a high standard of caregiving. One coworker commented, “During the time I worked with Bill, he exercised a good level of reliability, consistency, dedication and good communication skills. I see him also as a critical thinker regarding the care of our mutual patient.”
Pamela Rowan, Clinical Manager II, who nominated Bill for the award shares “[Bill] regularly takes on additional shifts to help his client. Bill has sacrificed his own family time to support his patient and even postponed his own doctor’s appointment to be there for the client, “Bill is an extremely devoted caregiver who is always willing to go the extra mile.”
Caregivers like Bill embody true servant leadership showing unwavering dedication and selflessness in challenging times to enhance the quality of life for those we serve.
