Today, you’ll hear from Megan Hill, a Talent Acquisition Specialist in our corporate office. In this article, she shares why she joined Maxim Healthcare, and why she recommends Maxim as a great place to work!

My name is Megan Hill, and I am a Talent Acquisition Specialist with Maxim Healthcare. In my role, I work to hire candidates for positions within our Maxim offices, primarily in our Florida and Tennessee locations. As someone who started with Maxim as a Recruiter Trainee in 2018, I find it so rewarding to discuss Maxim with candidates often in similar positions to mine when I first started with the company. A question that I often get when screening candidates is – why Maxim? What have I enjoyed about the company, and why have I stayed so long? Here’s my answer.

Company culture

Every company I’ve ever worked with has said that they prioritize cultivating a positive company culture, but Maxim is one of the few companies I’ve worked with that really “walks the walk.”

When describing this to candidates, I often tell a story from back when I first started with Maxim. It was 2018, and I had just graduated from Georgia Tech. I’d moved to the Pensacola area to live with my future husband, who was Active Duty in the Air Force. I didn’t know anyone in the area except for him, and I hadn’t lived there long before he had to deploy for the first time. Suddenly, I was pretty much alone in a new place, and the only other support system I had was my coworkers at Maxim Healthcare in Pensacola.

On the way to work one morning, I got in a car accident. I was hit by a container truck, and while it thankfully hadn’t resulted in harm to me, my car was another story. At the time, I was scared. I was 22 on my own in a new place. I had no idea who to call. I sent a group text to my coworkers and manager to let them know what was going on since I certainly wouldn’t be making it to work on time. My Operations Manager, Jessica, called me immediately. She was worried and wanted to make sure I was safe. In a vulnerable moment, I let her know that I was safe but that I had no idea what to do or who to call. Without hesitation, she let me know to hang tight and that she was on the way to come get me.

That day, she picked me up and took me to the hospital to make sure I really was uninjured (thankfully, I was unharmed). She took me to the tow yard to pick up my belongings and took me back to my apartment. She assured me that if I needed to take the next day off to get things sorted out, it wouldn’t be an issue. When I finally settled in for the day, I checked my phone and found messages from the rest of my coworkers asking how I was doing and letting me know that they would handle my workload – so that I wouldn’t be stressed about taking a couple of days off.

This is, obviously, a unique situation, but I think it exemplifies some of the best parts of Maxim. Every manager I’ve had with Maxim has been like Jessica in one way or another. They haven’t all had to come pick me up after a car accident, but they have all been supportive and kind. They’ve balanced their need to provide strong leadership and feedback with their ability to provide understanding and empathy. Company culture starts from the top down, and Maxim truly has some great people setting the standard.

Growth opportunities

During my last semester in college, I applied to many jobs in search of a position that would allow me to move to be with my husband in Pensacola. Being in the Air Force, he didn’t get to decide where to live, so if we wanted to be in the same place, I needed to find employment near him.

Anyone who has ever had to apply for jobs in a state they’re not local to knows that it can be a challenge. When I finally came on board with Maxim, I knew that I wanted to work for a company that would promote from within – I didn’t want to have to apply for new jobs every few years at different places. Most companies say that they offer advancement, but this is another area where Maxim truly does “walk the walk.”

I started with Maxim as a Recruiter Trainee. I had very minimal recruiting experience prior to that, but due to Maxim’s recruiter training program, that wasn’t an issue. By the end of the 90-day program, I had a great grasp on the basics of healthcare recruiting, and I also had the other recruiters in my office who would continue to support me. Over my first year in Pensacola, I grew from Recruiter Trainee to Recruiter III.

After working as a recruiter in Pensacola for a little over 3 years, I applied to be a Talent Acquisition Specialist with our corporate office. Soon after, I got the job and settled into my new position. A year later, I was promoted to my current title – Talent Acquisition Specialist II. Since being in Talent Acquisition, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing candidates I’ve hired as recruiter trainees work their way up to leadership positions within Maxim. I can tell entry-level candidates, with complete certainty, that Maxim Healthcare offers great opportunities for advancement – it isn’t just a job; it can be the start of a long-term career in healthcare.

Helping people & making a difference

When speaking with candidates, one of the questions I ask most frequently is why they are interested in healthcare. It’s no surprise to me that one of the most common answers I receive is that they are looking for a way they can help people and make a positive difference. As a Psychology major, this is something to which I can relate, and I think it is one of the biggest motivators for people working in the healthcare field.

I believe that is why, when I found Maxim, everything seemed to fall into place. Working as a recruiter with Maxim allowed me to utilize my education in Psychology and Business, and it also allowed me to help people. The patients that Maxim provides services for may have a variety of different diagnoses or care needs, but the commonality among all of them is that they and their families need care. As a recruiter, I oversaw the hiring of quality caregivers for those patients. While it was not always an easy task, it was always worth the effort when I was able to pair a nurse with a patient that ended up being a perfect fit. Even today, though I haven’t been in the recruiter role for a few years now, there are still nurses that I hired in Pensacola working with the patients for whom I hired for them.

There is truly no better feeling than getting to speak with a patient’s family and hearing that the nurse that you found for them is working out wonderfully. The relief and joy that it can bring to the patient and their families, makes the more challenging aspects of the job well worth it. It is still the biggest reason that I love working with Maxim – I know that the work I am doing, whether as a Talent Acquisition Specialist, Recruiter, or any other position, is contributing to those patients getting the nursing care they need and making things a bit easier for the families.

That, along with everything else I’ve discussed, is why I am still so happy to choose Maxim Healthcare every day.
