What does a Certified Nursing Assistant do?

A CNA assists with activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients and provides basic nursing care, including helping with transfers, bathing, and maintaining personal hygiene. Home care CNAs are supervised by a registered nurse.

Here are some ways a CNA helps a patient:

  • Assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.)
  • Help with feeding
  • Support with range of motion and medically prescribed home exercise
  • Stand-by assistance with walking and transfers
  • Help with toileting and incontinence
  • Communicating with medical team

Advantages of becoming a CNA for your loved one

As a parent or family member, nobody understands the daily needs of your loved one better than you do. The “Parent-as-CNA” program is unique to Colorado Medicaid and allows family members (not just parents) to earn certification to become a caregiver for their loved one, based on medical necessity. It allows an opportunity to earn a viable income as an employee of a home healthcare agency.

  • We help cover your CNA certification costs.
  • By becoming your family member’s certified caregiver, you don’t have to worry about lapses in care.
  • With a trusted parent or family member as a CNA, some financial burden is relieved for the family.

In order to become a CNA, certain eligibility requirements must be met. Contact us for complete details.

How to become a CNA

Along with general coursework, certification programs put a heavy emphasis on clinical training. In a simulated patient environment, students learn skills that include proper transfer techniques, feeding methods, catheter care, personal hygiene, and other activities of daily living.
