Behind every successful home healthcare experience is a team working diligently to keep operations running smoothly. One of the key roles driving that success is the field support specialist. Often described as the administrative backbone of the office, these professionals bridge the gap between caregivers, patients and internal teams. For this blog, we spoke with Nina Mann, a Field Support Specialist II at Maxim Healthcare and the Phoenix office’s 2025 Team Member of the Year. She shared how field support specialists help advance Maxim’s mission of delivering compassionate, quality care to individuals with chronic and acute conditions.
What does a field support specialist do?
A typical day in the role
“I start every day with a planner and a cold brew in hand,” says Mann. “Planning my day makes a big difference. In my planner, my tasks are categorized based on priority and how quickly they can be completed. Flexibility is key when urgent needs arise.”
Mann states that time-blocking is a strategy she uses to address competing priorities. Staying adaptable makes it possible to navigate shifting priorities effectively.
“I block out times to work on tasks in 1-hour blocks,” says Mann. “I try not to allow other tasks or distractions pull me away from my blocked time. There are times when something will come up and need my immediate attention, but I always try to go back to my original task.”
Creating a positive experience
Field support specialists are often the first point of contact for visitors and caregivers entering the office. A friendly greeting, a quick introduction and a welcoming smile go a long way, Mann says. Whether guiding someone to a conference room or a skills lab, the goal is to make each interaction professional yet personable.
“I make it a priority to check in with caregivers by asking how their day is going and engaging in brief, genuine conversation, so their visit feels welcoming and not solely business-focused,” Mann explains.
Collaboration across teams
This role is highly collaborative. Mann explains that field support specialists partner closely with teams across the office, particularly recruiters and clinical supervisors. She adds that communication tools like Microsoft Teams are essential for keeping everyone aligned, enabling quick updates and seamless coordination.
Skills for success
To succeed in field support, Mann highlights several skills that set top performers apart:
- Strong organization and time management
- Clear communication
- Empathy and compassion
- Problem-solving
- Customer service or administrative experience
Continuous growth
Field support specialists come from a variety of backgrounds, often building on prior roles that develop strong operational and client-facing skills. Many begin their careers in roles such as client coordinator, which provide foundational experience in operations and client support. Based on their interests and skill sets, others may transition from recruiting.
A field support specialist role offers several opportunities for growth, though these can vary depending on the office, region and the individual’s career goals. From the field support specialist position, one potential advancement path is to a field support specialist III, a more senior role that carries responsibilities similar to a field support manager, though without full approval authority or direct reports. The field support manager role is typically considered the next formal leadership step, offering increased responsibility, decision-making authority and team management. Additionally, there may be opportunities to work on a hub field support team, which can broaden experience and exposure across multiple offices, but is not always classified as a promotion.
Mann is committed to growing within the organization and advancing into a leadership role, so dedicating time for professional development is a key priority.
“I’m always trying to grow and learn in my career journey with Maxim, so I spend one hour a week focusing on that as well as things to better my team,” says Mann.
Advice for aspiring field support specialists
For anyone considering this career, one piece of advice stands out from Mann: Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
“There are always resources and team members ready to help, and learning from others is a powerful way to grow in the role,” says Mann.
